Wide Area Network
  • (WAN) A physical or logical network that provides capabilities for a number of independent devices to communicate with each other over a common transmission-interconnected topology in geographic areas larger than those served by local area networks. Note 1: A user may describe a collection of physical networks, e. g. , ISDN, X. 25, T1, as the user's logical WAN environment. Note 2: A MAN is a special case of a WAN in which the area covered is a metropolitan area. WANs may be country-wide or world-wide.
