Error-Correcting Code
  • A code in which each telegraph or data signal conforms to specific rules of construction so that departures from this construction in the received signals can generally be automatically detected and corrected. If the number of errors is not greater than the maximum correctable threshold of the code, then all errors are corrected.
  • Note 1: Such codes require more signal elements than are necessary to convey the basic information.
  • Note 2: The two main classes of error-correction codes are block codes and convolutional codes. See also block code, code, convolutional code, error control, forward error correction, Hagelbarger code, Hamming code.
